HERE Studies is a pre-study course that prepares displaced persons with residence permits for regular studies at universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The program comprises language as well as subject-related courses. HERE-Studies help prospective students realize their aim of obtaining a university education.
What dour HERE Studies offer?
You must possess good language competences at level C1 if you want to study successfully at a university in the Federal State of Bremen. We offer you:
- advice on how to take up studies in Bremen and Bremerhaven
- language training from 0 to C1
- subject-related preparation
- scientific methods
- preparation for the entrance exam
- examination procedure for people with inadequate documents
Who can participate?
- prospective international students with a university entrance qualification
- people officially recognized as refugees
- people with missing documents on school and/or academic career
- Residents of Bremen and Bremerhaven or the surrounding districts of Ammerland, Aurich, Brake, Cloppenburg, Cuxhaven, Diepholz, Leer, Nienburg, Oldenburg, Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Rotenburg/Wümme, Stade, Vechta, Verden, Westerstede, Wittmund as well as Delmenhorst, Oldenburg, and Wilhelmshaven
How do I apply and when?
Application is a five-step procedure:
- Online registration
for HERE Studies for courses in April 2020 will be availiable this fall.
Please note: During your online registration you have to choose a subject cluster in which you want to study after you passed your C1 examn. Choose the following links to see which study programs are integrated in each cluster:

The TestAS for refugees is free of charge and each participant can take the test only once. You cannot pay to participate in the TestAS for refugees. If you wish to repeat the exam you may register for the regular TestAS (test languages German or English): Test dates regular TestAS
If you have registered for the test but do not show up your participation still counts. That is because a large part of the costs have already incurred.
- Validation by uni-assist
uni-assist examines whether international certificates qualify for taking up studies in Germany. You require this validation in order to register for HERE Studies. Applications must be submitted to uni-assist by January 15 and July 15 respectively.

What does the program cost?
HERE-Studies is tuition-free for participants with official refugee status. Job Centers and welfare agencies may be able to provide further assistance. You should inquire at your local office.
Some foundations offer scholarships for refugees when applying for a regular study program. Please find more information on the site "scholarships"
Where can I study in Bremen following my HERE Studies?
Successful completion of HERE Studies entitles you to study as a regular student at one of the following universities in in Bremen and Bremerhaven:

What's the content of our program?
Our program consists of three parts: language acquisition, HERE mentoring and extra-curricular preparation
Language acquisition, of course, takes the longes time. On all language levels each course will take 5,6 weeks. The language courses are accompanied by the language tutor program and language café of the FZHB. The language courses and the tutorials are mandatory.
The HERE mentoring prepares our students on topics like cross-cultural training and applied geography, schedule, higher education in Bremen and a lot more. These courses too are mandatory.
In addition, you take part in seminars on cross-cultural training, study techniques and in-depth applied geography.
Together with your TestDaF/C1 exam theses courses will prepare you for studying at one of our universities in Bremen or Bremerhaven.
