HEALTH - focus on bioactive substances

Designing solutions for a healthier world has always been one of the great challenges of science. The goal is to make a healthy life possible for the growing world population as a whole and for each human being. Food, plants and marine algae can have a similarly positive effect on health as medication. However, scientists first have to identify and isolate their bioactive substances and check their safe application through transdisciplinary cooperation between geo science, life sciences, physics and chemistry.

Study programs

Medical Natural Sciences - International Students (Preparatory Study Program)

The Medical Natural Sciences program specifically prepares students for later studies in medicine at a German state university. This preparatory program combines modules in natural sciences, life sciences, and medicine with German language courses. The foundations in the natural sciences are laid in science modules, comprising a series of lectures in disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics with two corresponding lab courses. Students will also become familiar with basic concepts of life sciences and medicine in specialized modules. The medicine module will include an introduction to the German health care system.


Biochemistry and Cell Biology (BSc)

Biochemistry is the study of molecules and chemical processes in living organisms, while Cell Biology is concerned with the structure and physiology of cells, their components, and interactions with the environment. The two fields are combined in one comprehensive degree program, which will give you a broad understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that form the basis of life. You will not only get the theoretical background of these core areas but also be involved in hands-on research right from the start of your studies.


Chemistry (BSc)

The transdisciplinary Bachelor degree in Chemistry offers modules that include courses in nanomolecular science, organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry; it also equips students with the relevant knowledge of mathematics, engineering, and industrial priorities. Over the course of the three-year study program, you will take extensive laboratory courses and conduct your own research projects during your third year of study. Undergraduate students are also strongly encouraged to engage in research projects with graduate students as early as their first or second semester at Jacobs University.


Earth and Environmental Sciences (BSc)

This program combines traditional disciplines in geosciences such as geochemistry, geophysics, oceanography, and environmental sciences, and connects these to social sciences, economics, and management. Students learn about the sustainable exploration and management of natural resources, the evolution of the Earth’s crust, climate, and oceans, and about the anthropogenic impact on natural systems. Practical, international field excursions, involvement in ongoing research projects, and internships are integral parts of the program. The Jacobs Geoscience program was highly ranked in the CHE RANKING 2015.


Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology (BSc)

The Medicinal Chemistry & Chemical Biology (MCCB) program places the student at the forefront of the revolutionary efforts now underway to understand and treat disease. The program provides a fundamental understanding of the drug-body interaction, from the molecular to the macromolecular level, allowing the identification and exploitation of bioactive molecules. The topics will range from drug discovery, molecular docking, drug delivery and resistance, to the intricacies of refining our knowledge of drug target and function within molecular biology. Your studies in MCCB will also comprise early research involvement.


Physics (BSc)

Physics has developed fundamental concepts of space, time, and matter which have shaped our view of the universe. It not only lays the foundation for other natural sciences, but physics is also a fundamental part of modern technology as it can be found in solar cells, computers, and airplanes. The program covers an introduction to classical and modern physics followed by advanced courses in electrodynamics, relativity, quantum physics, and solid state physics, to name but a few. Students get the opportunity to participate in current faculty research projects. The Jacobs Physics program was highly ranked in the CHE RANKING 2015.


Computational Life Science (MSc)

Current biological and medical research relies on mathematical modeling and on complex computational tools. Sophisticated high-throughput techniques pose new challenges for data integration and data interpretation. The Computational Life Science program meets these challenges by covering computational, theoretical and mathematical approaches in the life sciences. It is geared towards students of the life sciences, bioinformatics, physics, computer science, applied mathematics and related areas.


Petroleum Exploration (MSc)

This two-year program is aimed at highly skilled, numerate and experienced students with a Bachelor degree in geosciences or natural sciences who are interested in pursuing a career in the hydrocarbon industry. Students will spend their first year at the University of Leeds followed by a second year of studying at Jacobs University. Courses include lectures, computer labs, field excursions, project work, summer industry internships, group work, soft skills and optional language courses. The final MSc thesis work may be conducted either at Jacobs University or at the University of Leeds, UK.
